Tech in Mining weekly #3
Hello everyone, hope you're all doing well! Please forward it to a friend/ colleague who you think would be interested in getting these updates 😃
🗞Interesting updates
Most mining systems are silo'ed which prevents systems from communicating with each other seamlessly. Modular Mining, an Arizona based company making mine management solutions, launched its API that integrates with various third parties programs such as Mineware and Komatsu's data feed. We look forward to more companies following this path because it will lead to faster innovation and interoperability, benefitting the entire mining value chain. More here 🤝
We are seeing more activity in the autonomous haulage space - more recently Rajanat (mesh network that enables vehicle to vehicle communication in larger open pit mines) and Hitachi systems partnered to deploy 6 trucks at a mine in Australia. They hope to get to 45 trucks by next year! More here 🤖
COVID-19 will push mines to accelerate their digitization efforts not just in the short term (e.g. social distancing tech) but also more on the longer term 'new-normal'. We're curious to see whether remote management of mines will become an area of focus for the industry. More here 💻
Mining expo in Las Vegas is postponed until next year due to COVID. We were expecting they would do something remote meanwhile this year, but no update on that, unfortunately. More here 😕
🤿Deep dives
This year, the International Seabed Authority (under the UN) will issue a legal code that regulates seabed mining for commercial purposes in international waters. Whether or not a deep-sea mining industry will spur is still a big unknown (environmental impact, costs, national regulations, etc.). e-flux dives deep into this here (see the image below if you are just curious enough but don't want to read the entire article).
That's it for this week. As before, we'd love to hear any feedback you may have for us. Take care!
